Xochicalli Educational Garden

The community learning garden is a revolutionary new concept that transforms the typical office building landscape into a vibrant community space that promotes learning and community engagement. This is particularly significant given the lack of green spaces in North Long Beach. We hope that our example inspires other organizations and community groups to create their own community gardens in their neighborhoods.

By creating this garden, we have demonstrated that small lands, such as those surrounding an office building, can be transformed into thriving green spaces that serve the community. Not only does this approach provide an opportunity for individuals to learn about gardening and native plants, but it also offers a chance for the community to come together and engage with one another in a meaningful way.

We believe that this model can be replicated in other neighborhoods facing similar challenges in terms of access to green spaces. By working together and creatively reimagining the use of land, we can transform our urban landscapes into vibrant and productive spaces that enhance the quality of life for all members of our communities.

El jardín comunitario de aprendizaje es un concepto revolucionario que transforma el paisaje típico de los edificios de oficinas en un espacio vibrante de la comunidad que promueve el aprendizaje y la participación comunitaria. Esto es particularmente significativo dada la falta de espacios verdes en el norte de Long Beach. Esperamos que nuestro ejemplo inspire a otras organizaciones y grupos comunitarios a crear sus propios jardines comunitarios en sus vecindarios.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Puente Latino Association held a successful event on Sunday October 30 2022 featuring Master Gardener Melissa Shilling. The event was aimed at teaching participants how to clone edible mushrooms for growing at home.

The free class was open to the public and had limited capacity, so participants had to sign up in advance. Everyone was asked to bring a 1-gallon resealable plastic bag and a clean 24oz plastic container with lid that they wanted to use.

During the class, Melissa Shilling showed the participants how to clone store-bought mushrooms and add spawn, Agaricus subrufescens, to grow in a garden bed and make spore prints. The class was very interactive and engaging, and everyone had the chance to ask questions and get hands-on experience.

The event was a great success, and the participants left with a new skill they could apply at home. The Puente Latino Association hopes to continue hosting similar events in the future and expanding its outreach to the community. The organization believes that by promoting gardening and sustainable practices, it can empower individuals to take control of their health and environment.

La Asociación Puente Latino llevó a cabo un evento exitoso el fin de semana pasado con la participación de la Maestra Jardinera Melissa Shilling. El evento tuvo como objetivo enseñar a los participantes cómo clonar hongos comestibles para cultivarlos en casa.

La clase gratuita estuvo abierta al público y tenía capacidad limitada, por lo que los participantes debían inscribirse con anticipación. A todos se les pidió que llevaran una bolsa de plástico resellable de 1 galón y un recipiente de plástico limpio de 24 oz con tapa que quisieran utilizar.

Durante la clase, Melissa Shilling mostró a los participantes cómo clonar hongos comprados en la tienda y agregar esporas, Agaricus subrufescens, para cultivarlos en una cama de jardín y hacer impresiones de esporas. La clase fue muy interactiva y participativa, y todos tuvieron la oportunidad de hacer preguntas y obtener experiencia práctica.

El evento fue un gran éxito y los participantes se fueron con una nueva habilidad que pudieron aplicar en casa.
